Paymark has announced that 60,000 EFTPOS terminals across New Zealand need to be upgraded to enable them to process payments in accordance with new global security standards. Without the upgrade your business and most importantly your bottom-line will be affected, as not only will you be in breach of those standards, but your business will also be unable of processing certain types of local and international card types. If businesses are not upgraded in time they will be at risk and face possible disconnection from the Paymark network who are NZ’s leading electronic payments provider.

New Zealander’s that use eftpos need to be aware of card skimming after three Canadian’s were arrested in what police say is an international crime syndicate, which secretly modifies eftpos machines in shops to steal customers’ credit card details.

Some tips to avoid this happening to your business:

- Know your staff and give them adequate training. Empower them to question anyone trying to make alterations to your terminal.
- Never allow your eftpos terminal to be maintained or swapped without prior notice from your eftpos provider. If anyone attempts to, take their name and company and call their head office to confirm they actually work there! Ask for ID.
- Record the serial number of your eftpos terminal and PINpad and keep it somewhere secure away from your terminal. Check the serial number matches the terminal weekly.
- If you suspect your terminal has been tampered with, do not process any transactions and contact your eftpos provider immediately.

Recent fraudulent activity around eftpos terminals in Australia resulting in $5 million dollars of losses has highlighted the need to be vigilant around your eftpos terminal.

Your eftpos terminal is equipped with a number of built-in security features which have been designed to protect your customers’ information. There are also several good practices you can implement to protect your business and customers from fraud.
- Always ensure your eftpos terminal is secure and monitored during opening hours.
- Ensure that employees are fully trained on the use of your terminal. Viaduct can provide easy to follow quick guides for every terminal.
- Never allow your eftpos terminal to be maintained or swapped without prior notice from your eftpos provider. Card skimmers replace the PIN pad with a modified one which allows them to capture the customers card number and also their PIN.

- Record your terminal’s serial number and store in a secure location. Check the serial number matches the terminal weekly.
