How to process chipcard creditcard or eftpos transactions

Over the last year or two, with the increase in international travellers and banks upgrading normal traditional credit cards to chip cards you may have been aware of an increasing number of customers with EMV enabled chip-cards visiting your premises.

From July 2007 there will be some changes to the way you process transactions using EMV chip-cards on your version 5.1 terminals. If you do not have an upgraded terminal then call us on 0800 484 238.

  1. For all cards, first swipe the customer??s card through the magnetic stripe card reader. If the card is a magnetic stripe card the transaction will proceed as normal. Remember to give the Cardholder back their card, with the receipt, when the transaction is complete

  2. For a chip card, the terminal will prompt you to insert the card into the chip reader. It is very important that you leave the card in the terminal until the transaction is finished. The slot for the chip card should be clearly marked on your terminal.

  3. Follow all further instructions on the terminal.

  4. Do not remove the card until instructed to do so ?? early removal will cancel the transaction.

  5. The ??Accepted? or ??Declined? message will show following removal of the card, at which point the transaction is complete.

  6. If there is a problem with the chip card you may be asked to swipe the card again as the transaction “falls back” to magstripe processing mode.
  7. If your terminal appears to be slow to process transactions, you must perform a ??Manual Logon? as follows:

  • Press the Logon Button

  • Upon completion of a successful logon, the terminal will print an accepted receipt then immediately start to download.

  • Upon completion of a successful EMV download, the terminal will display ??Download Complete?.
