Grace period for eftpos merchants

Both networks have now confirmed a grace period for those merchants that have yet to upgrade. Both Paymark and Eftpos New Zealand. This from Peter Mcleod, Managing Director at Eftpos New Zealand in the New Zealand Herald.

Peter Mcleod Eftpos New Zealand

What does this mean for retailers, and what happens if I haven’t upgraded by January 1?

Most existing eftpos terminals can be upgraded to the new standards by a relatively simple software upload, which will be done by the eftpos terminal provider. Some of the older models, such as those without chip card readers, will need to be replaced. The costs of doing this depends on the eftpos provider, the model of eftpos terminal, and whether it’s owned or rented.

The official upgrade deadline is January 1, 2008, but in recognition of this being in the middle of a busy time for retailers, there will be a short grace period to ensure all terminals are upgraded. Merchants are being encouraged to upgrade as soon as possible to avoid a last-minute rush and to ensure they don’t put themselves at risk of being disconnected.

Will retailers get cut off from the network if they don’t upgrade?

It’s important that New Zealand doesn’t fall behind the global timeframe. No set time has been given for a final “drop dead” date, and this decision will be made by EFTPOS New Zealand and Paymark as eftpos network providers. No merchants will be switched off without first having had plenty of warning and every opportunity to upgrade.

Getting ready for Christmas

The Christmas season is a very busy season for merchants and their eftpos, to ensure trouble free transactions through this period we recommend the following steps.

1. Offline vouchers & paper. The networks and terminals can breakhave had some issues over christmas so be prepared, ensure you have off line vouchers and your staff know how to use them. Ensure you have enough paper rolls for eftpos terminal. If you need paper or off line vouchers give us a call on 0800 484 238.

2. Fraud Protection. You and your staff are the first line of defence against fraudulent card behaviour and should always be on the lookout for any unusual behaviour or spending patterns. Let common sense be your guide.

Pin Entry Devices explained

Through this current upgrade process merchants need to be aware of the latest standards that effect the longevity of the current eftpos terminal offerings. There has been a date put out to the market from the credit card schemes that from the 31st December 2007 all terminals going into the marketplace will need to be PCI PED compliant.

PCI PED is an updated requirement for manufacturers that sell PIN pads and terminals with internal PIN pads. It is a standard testing process that combines one set of standards for each of the PCI members (Visa, MasterCard and JCB), helping ensure cardholder security and providing faster time-to-market for financial institutions.
