Leasetech gets Eftpos expansion with Numeria buy

Auckland IT equipment leasing firm Leasetech has bought Numeria Leasing, a subsidiary of Capital and Merchant Finance, which has been in receivership since last November.
Numeria??s business has mainly been focused on operating eftpos equipment leases and Leasetech will take this over, as well as offering new leases through Numeria??s dealer network.
Leasetech managing director Juri Zacest says the acquisition will add 10,000 customers to its base, taking it in a new direction that complements its other business.
??Leasetech has traditionally focused on office equipment leasing for the small to medium business market, such as computers, printers, other hardware and software. The expansion into eftpos equipment leasing is a natural fit,? he says. You can read more on reseller news.

Never disclose your pin numbers to anyone.

Been an increase in fraudulent activity in and around eftpos terminals and eftpos cards.  This article on stuff has the story. The crux of it is that immediately after stealing an eftpos or credit card, fraudsters will imply they are from the bank and call the card owner to try and get the pin.

Takapuna community senior constable Gavin Leonard says the fraudsters will call the card holder a number of times with a plausible story to establish a sense of trust.

On the second or third call they will ask the card holder to disclose their pin number.

Mr Leonard says shopkeepers should make sure their wallets are secure.

Once again the message is be careful with your own cards and ensure that no one is watching when your customers enter their pins.

Always nice when the efforts of our staff get recognised. We work very hard to ensure we are providing the payment solution that works for our customers or to ensure we have the flexibility to adjust where required.

New method in eftpos fraud

Reported on Newstalk this morning.

Police are hopeful they are closing in on a man who has stolen around $100,000 in a bogus courier scam in Northland and Auckland.

The man uses a portable EFTPOS machine to swipe cards for a small courier payment, then uses the details to fleece money from the victims’ bank accounts.  If you get a courier coming to your store with items remember to check with head office or get identification.

Whangarei detective constable Michelle Marrison says the man is believed to have also stolen around $10 million from victims in Australia. She says police are following a number of leads and are hopeful they will catch him.

This scam relies on people being very busy and not bothered by small transactions. Makes the case for chipcards even more important.

Final Days for some eftpos terminals

This is the last week for up to 2000 merchants to upgrade their eftpos terminals to accept the new chip cards or they will be disconnected from the Paymark network. The disconnections begin on the 16th of June 2008.

There is still time to get the new terminal installed or at least inform the network that you have begun the process to upgrade so as to avoid the inconvenience.

If you have received a notification letter from your bank then give us a call on 0800 484 238 and we can ensure that your eftpos service remains in place.
